Changes to .UK domain processes
Nominet (who run The UK Domain) are transitioning .UK domains to a new registry platform on the 9th February 2027, referred to as .UK Standardisation. These changes to our policies, systems and processes will enable our registrars (the company who looks after a domain name) to provide full domain management for their registrants (domain owners).
This means all .UK registrants will need to manage their .UK domains directly through a registrar.
You can find out more about what these changes mean for you, how we can continue to support you through the process and answers to some frequently asked questions below.
What you need to know
Currently Nominet can help registrants with some .UK domain queries and processes and offer the option to manage some of these through an online account called Nominet Online Services.
From the 9th February 2027, we’ll be removing the ability to manage domains directly with us, through our teams and Online Services. This is because registrars will be able to provide a full service to you and complete all processes and management instructions for .UK domains.
You can find out more about specific processes in our FAQs below. If you have any queries that aren’t covered, please reach out to the support team.
FAQS
How do I find out who my registrar is?
You can enter your .UK domain name(s) into our Domain Lookup Tool to find domain details including registrar name and website address.
Which processes are changing?
A number of our processes will be changing; some examples include updating your name and contact details, changing registrar and cancelling a domain name. Our current support content and FAQs reflect our processes today, but we will update these once any changes come into effect.
How will I know which processes are changing?
For now, you’ll be able to see a notification on individual support articles and FAQs on the UK Domain website notifying you that the process is due to change. Once the process has changed, our support articles and FAQs will be updated.
Does this impact all of my domains?
This impacts all .UK domains (.co.uk, .uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .ltd.uk and .org.uk).
Do I need to do anything before the transition date?
Until the transition date, our current processes remain the same, so you’ll be able to continue managing your .UK domain name(s) as you currently are.
After the transition date, you will need to manage your domain and make any updates through your registrar rather than directly with us, so you’ll need to make sure you have access to do this.
Please ensure you have read the updated .UK Registrant Terms and Conditions ahead of transition, you can find out more here.
What happens if I am a direct registrant with Nominet?
Direct management of domain names with Nominet will not be possible after this change, and all domain names will need to be managed through a .UK registrar.
We will contact all direct registrants in due course and work with them to support the transfer of their domain names to a registrar, helping to ensure a smooth transition.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please do get in touch.
Do I need to do anything with my Online Services account?
You don’t currently need to take any specific action. However, after the transition date you will no longer be able to make updates directly with us, so you’ll need to ensure you have access to manage your domain through your registrar.
Is the contractual relationship between Nominet and registrars changing?
No, Nominet is not removing the three-way contractual relationship. The current agreement will remain in place, and we will continue to have a contract with the registrar via the .UK Registry-Registrar Agreement and the registrant via the .UK Registrant Terms and Conditions, as shown by the diagram below.
