Nominet (who run the UK Domain) will be updating the .UK Registrant Terms and Conditions from 9th February 2027. Understand the key changes as a registrant (owner) of a .UK domain and what you need to do, alongside answers to some frequently asked questions below.

Nominet are transitioning .UK domains to a new registry platform on the 9th February 2027, referred to as .UK Standardisation. This will change how registrars and registrants engage with .UK and modernises many of our services and policies to bring them closer to industry standards. Registrants are in a direct contractual relationship with Nominet via the .UK Registrant Terms and Conditions, this is generally achieved through the acceptance of a registrar’s domain name registration agreement. As part of .UK Standardisation, these terms have been updated and the new document can be found here.

These changes come into effect on the 9th February 2027. Registrants remain in direct contract with Nominet following these changes and do not need to take any action beyond reviewing the updated terms.

The below information summarises the key changes to the terms and conditions. Please note, registrants are responsible for reading and understanding the full updated terms.

The updated terms and conditions are mostly a modernisation and restructuring of the existing registrant agreement, rather than a fundamental change in policy. Most existing registrant obligations aren’t changing, including requirements to provide accurate information, comply with dispute resolution procedures and avoid unlawful use of domain names.

Registrant data and privacy: Section 7 documents the use and disclosure of registration data and links to Nominet’s Privacy Notice. This provides greater clarity around the data that is collected and processed, aligning with modern privacy requirements.

Contact details: As set out in section 5, registrants must keep their contact details up to date and update any changes within 7 days. Failure to maintain accurate contact information or respond to verification requests (within 30 days) may result in restrictions being placed on the domain or the domain being cancelled.

Domain licensing: Domain licensing refers to situations where the registrant allows another person or organisation to use a domain name they have registered. Section 4 of the updated terms sets out the rules covering domains licensed to third parties and the responsibilities of the registrant.

Support and escalation routes: The updated terms clarify that registrants should work through their registrar for day-to-day domain management. The terms also provide a commitment to an escalation route for registrants where a registrar is not complying with its agreements with Nominet.

Terms and termination: Section 11 introduces a dedicated set of clauses explaining how the agreement starts and ends, and which provisions survive termination.
